Get to know Debbie Martin

Debbie-7As Marketing & Patron Services Manager, Debbie Martin administers, creates and executes plans for marketing, advertising, branding, public relations and ticket sales for concerts and other events.  In addition, Debbie is an advocate and spokesperson for Civic Music Association throughout the community and manages all patron services, ensuring a positive concert experience from start to finish.
Background (birthplace, education, training, prior careers):
Newton is my hometown and then moved to Springfield, MO where I graduated from Southwest Missouri State.  After college, I moved to St. Louis and worked at the St. Louis Zoo as Special Events Coordinator for private events such as wedding receptions and corporate dinners.  Upon returning to Iowa, I ventured into opening and managing a restaurant, The Gaucho Café, in Newton.
Why I do what I do:
The first thing that brought me to Civic Music Association was my love and passion for music. The thing that keeps me at Civic Music Association is that its mission holds true to my heart:  to engage, enrich and educate the central Iowa community through provocative, world-class musical performances by legends and rising stars.  When I see local students interact with these famed musicians or I see people react to a concert they just attended, it creates this realization of the importance to maintaining this aspect in their lives.  Music develops so many responses – emotional, physiological, educational, and inspirational.  And I love being a part of that!
What I do to get away from work:
I listen to music. Ha!  Actually I do.  I love to travel to see my favorite bands – this combines my love of music and my love of travel and culture.  It’s even better if it’s a road trip – more time for music on the way.  Outside of music?  Cooking has always been an escape for me as well as a good book on the couch snuggling with my dog, Mattie.  I love spending time with friends and family.
How I give back to the community (volunteer activities, public service, board memberships, etc.):
I just recently joined the Sherman Hill Neighborhood Association Board of Directors and am excited to serve on their Home Tour Committee as co-chair.  I also serve on the Hospitality team at the Gateway Church.
Words to live by:
“When you give, you begin to live.”  ~Dave Matthews.  “Turns out, not where, but who you’re with that really matters.” ~Dave Matthews.  “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.” ~C.S. Lewis.
What Iowa can do to attract more people like me:
Des Moines does a great job, but continuing to support the arts and culture scene is vitally important to attracting more people to Iowa. Once people experience Des Moines, it sells itself.
What I would do if I could do something else:
Someday I’d like to open a bed and breakfast.  I’d serve bacon for breakfast every morning.
