Civic Music Announces 93rd Season

DES MOINES – Civic Music Association (CMA) is pleased to announce its 93rd season of jazz and classical music concerts in Des Moines.
From performances featuring two of the worlds’ most respected and awarded chamber ensembles, to a performance by a Grammy®-winning master of the alto sax, to one of New Orleans’ most celebrated jazz orchestras, CMA’s 2017/2018 season was designed with the adventurous in mind.
Civic Music Association’s seven-concert series begins on Oct. 6, 2017, with an unforgettable performance by Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble at Shelsow Auditorium. The London-based ensemble is one of the world’s premier chamber orchestras. Renowned for its fresh and brilliant interpretations of the worlds most loved classical music, The Washington Post praises the ensemble for their sweet and pure sounding music.
Again in October, CMA presents alto sax player and Grammy®– winning David Sanborn on Oct. 27, 2017, at Hoyt Sherman Place. Regarded as one of the most highly active musicians in Jazz, Sanborn is known for blending jazz with pop and R&B and is considered to be, “the most influential saxophonist for pop, R&B, and crossover players of the past 20 years.”
For our holiday concert on Dec. 9, 2017, CMA introduces the fun and unique trio, Time for Three. Violinist Nick Kendall, violinist Charles Yang and double-bassist Ranaan Meyer perform music from Bach to Katy Perry, as well as playing original pieces. Their contagious energy mixed with holiday cheer will result in one amazing concert at Sheslow Auditorium.
For the lovebirds, CMA welcomes Cyrille Aimée to the stage for her Des Moines debut performance on Feb. 16, 2018, at Sheslow Auditorium. Hailed as one of the most talented jazz singers of her generation, Aimée, and her band will effortlessly shift gears from classic jazz songs such as, “Three Litte Words” and “Love Me Or Leave Me” to Valentine’s Day themed ballads.
Trombonist and bandleader Delfeayo Marsalis returns to Des Moines for the second time, this time with the hard-swinging, New Orleans Jazz band: The Uptown Jazz Orchestra on Mar. 2, 2017 at Hoyt Sherman Place. The majority of the musicians are Louisiana natives, ranging from talented young students to respected veterans, who have continued the long jazz tradition of onstage apprenticeship. The Uptown Jazz Orchestra shows are always a good time and their soulful soloists get the audience cheering throughout the performance.
Julliard alums and renowned musicians, Lysander Piano Trio makes their Des Moines debut alongside clarinetist Charles Neidich on April 7, 2018, at Sheslow Auditorium. Together they will perform Transplated, a program by European composers who were displaced due to the rise of Nazism in the 1930s and who sought refuge in America and Israel.
To close out it’s 2017/2018 season, CMA welcomes four-time Grammy®– winning ensemble, Eighth Blackbird on May 12, 2018, at Sheslow Auditorium. Hailed as one of the most dynamic contemporary classical ensembles on the planet by the Chicago Tribune, these six virtuoso musicians will perform a diverse program of key works drawn from 20 years of commissions, collaborations and performances.
